Damnatio Memoriae

I released Dark Epiphany in 2021, track 2 is Show Pony, a song about a mask slipping, about someone whose whole presentation turned out to be surface, all performance and no substance underneath.

Polar Resolve followed in 2025, track 2 is Burn Witch Burn, a song that had been waiting years to be written, damage finally named out loud, no longer politely contained. After those two songs, I knew there had to be a third and final piece of the puzzle. You can’t end a story on fire. Fire burns out, or it burns you along with everything else, and I didn’t want to be standing in the ashes forever. So this one had to go somewhere colder, in a different way than anger is cold.

I found it in an old idea: damnatio memoriae. The condemnation of memory. A Roman practice, rather than write about what someone had done, they erased them. Names struck from the record. Officially, a person simply stopped existing.

That’s the song I’m building now. Not more anger, that already got said, and saying it twice is just bad manners. This is what comes after. The person who refuses to speak a name holds all the power. The person waiting to be named has none. Silence isn’t passive here. It’s the verdict.

I’m conscious this could tip into specifics — who, what, when. But that’s not the song, and it’s not really what damnatio memoriae is about either. The power was always in the erasure, not the explanation. So this stays abstract. A name lifted out of the stone. Whatever deserves the same treatment in your own life, you’ll find your own name to leave out of it.

Show Pony was the unveiling. Burn Witch Burn was the reckoning. This is the record getting corrected. Not peace. Just a door that doesn’t open again.

I’m still working on the new song, Damnatio Memoriae, and it’s coming together slowly and surely, just the way it should.
